The Role of Subretinal Aspiration in the Diagnosis and Management of Primary CNS Lymphoma

David Paul Busuttil

Primary intraocular lymphoma is a rare type of primary CNS lymphoma that can present with just eye symptoms. The case is presented of a patient who had recurrent bilateral uveitis that was treated with topical steroids. Magnetic Resonance imaging done of the head because of neurological symptoms which developed one year later revealed a diffuse infiltrative process in the brain. He was treated with methyprednisolone for a presumptive diagnosis of sarcoidosis. The diagnosis of intra- ocular lymphoma was made from a subretinal aspiration showing a population of monoclonal Blymphoplasmacytoid lymphocytes. Primary Intra-ocular lymphoma is a condition which is difficult to diagnose as it can mimic other conditions. There is usually a delay in diagnosis as empirical steroid therapy is commonly instituted which interferes with the dynamics of the disease process.
